How to dress for the office in the heat

When the sun is shining and its sweltering outside – unless you’re in air conditioned offices – dressing smartly in this heat is a challenge.  We all want to hang out in beach wear and sweat it out in sloppy shorts and a vest but when you have meetings to impress at, that just won’t cut it.

Check out these top finds for ideas on how to keep cool and chic at work…

Shirt dresses in light, natural, breathable fabrics such as linen and cotton work very well in the heat, plus they look uber smart thanks to the tailored cut.  Monsoon, Warehouse and Zara have plenty to choose from.  Wear with mules rather than flimsy flip flops – Topshop has some fabulous metallic ones.

You’ll need to check the company policy at your place of work but so long as they’re smart in appearance and not too short, shorts are fine for the office.  Choose well cut shorts in smart fabrics with structure.  Jersey is out – leave those for lounging at home!  Men can wear them with a smart, short sleeved shirt (or roll up the sleeves of your favourite work shirt), and women can team with a smart t-shirt or white top for instant chic.  Miss Selfridge has some stunning white tops in right now.

Dresses are actually very cool in the sunshine and always look polished.  Choose one with a bold print such as leaves or tropical themed.  This type of print will see you through autumn winter and is in for spring summer 2017 too – so it’s a bargain worth hanging on to.

Should the weather take a turn (and let’s face it, that is very likely), carry a smart blazer to layer over your outfit and you can instantly turn an otherwise casual look into a smart one.  It’s worth investing in one luxury jacket as you will go so much wear out of it and one like this will complete your look.  Go for a rich but wear-with-anything shade like navy and you can team it with a number of different garments already in your wardrobe.  White trousers will give you a French Riviera appeal, tailored shorts and a tie-up white shirt will be summery but chic and a summer dress will be upgraded from laid-back to luxe.
