The Fantastic Three: Meet the cool makeup brands in Debenhams

Makeup counters have come a long way haven’t they.  I recall walking by and being spritzed with perfume by over-made-up beauty therapists who pushed products on you.  I recently met three very different brands and expert teams that turned that on its head and shared their wealth of knowledge, original styles and new product releases…

Discover It

Makeup forever was founded by Dany Sanz who fuses her skills and experience across fine art, fashion and back-stage makeup looks, and as a Professor in a Makeup School to form a collection that has the formulas and high technology that processionals use.  Now though, it is available to us too…and when Jessie J is the face of a brand, you sit up and notice.

Star Players

Artist Face Colour

One of the stars of the show is undoubtedly the three-step face colour palette that you build yourself.  You buy the empty palette to create your own artists palette.  Choose as many colours and textures as you like, but the idea is to opt for a highlighter, a darker sculpting shade and a warmer blush shade.  I love that there’s a range of finishes including iridescent and matte to cater for varied tastes and skin types.

Aqua XL Colour Paint

This extra-long lasting waterproof cream shadow will not budge!  It has been tested on and worn by the French Synchronized Swimming team who train for eight hours a day in and out of water.  Though initially the makeup was just used in the pool for performances, the team all now wear it out of the pool whenever they get done up. Once you get used to makeup that is waterproof, smudge, sweat and tears-proof, it’s hard to go back.

Step 1 Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer.

What a game changer.  This skin primer provides good enough coverage on its own, in my option.  It smoothes out pores, preps skin, evens out your skin tone and brings you a step closer to complexion perfection.

Top Tip from the Team

Calvin expertly contoured my cheekbones in a mini makeover and gave me the golden nugget that ‘blend is your friend’, be sure to leave no telltale tide marks on any feature.  Blend, blend, blend for a flawless finish.

Good to Know

Have a makeup masterclass and learn with the pros on a number of different beauty areas.  Whether it’s skin techniques, the perfect lip, or to develop a signature look, tutorials and makeup application start from 30 minutes long at £25.

Kat Von D

Discover It

I fell in love with Kat Von D instantly.  Just like the creator herself, the range presents a bold mix of classic and edgy.  Long wear, high pigment and full coverage are their pillars and my goodness, this range performs.  It is as exciting as it is high performance.  The majority of the products by Kat Von D are vegan.  Although the FDA hasn’t established a regulation for what it means to be “vegan,” this brand defines it as as a product that does not contain any animal products or by-products, and has not been tested on animals.

Star Players

Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks.

I tried in Beloved, a soft coral which I’m going to buy in batches so I never run out.  They come in 43 shades and promise 24-hour wear, which they do indeed deliver on.  The bottom below image is the same lipstick 12 hours later at the end of the day.

Shade + Light Crème Contour Palette

This refillable crème contour palette with three shades for contouring and three shades for highlighting offers a 24-hour wear formula and total versatility.  I use the lighter, yellow-based shade for adding lluminosity under my eyes to completely lift the entire area, thus disguising the fact that I’ve had very little sleep (#mumlife).  I love products that multi-task as hard as I do so if you want a face powder, eye colour and contouring kit in one, you got it.

Tattoo Liner

A liquid liner that actually makes it simpler to perfect the winged liner look, thanks to the precision tip.  You can also use it to create temporary tattoo designs on your face and body a la Kat von D herself.  It’s easy to see why this won the 2017 Best Beauty by Stylist Award for best liquid eyeliner.

Top Tip from the Team

Take control of your look, use makeup to enhance your features, not disguise them and have fun.

Good to know

On September 14th, look out for a huge range of new launches including lip liners, crème contour, glimmer palette, liquid lips and blotting powder.  Whoop!

Urban Decay

Discover It

Urban Decay is a brand I’ve loved for a long time and you must’ve witnessed the hype over the Naked Palettes?  The reason they are still so successful is due to their consistent innovation and high performance products.  There is constant newness to surprise and delight and Urban Decay lead the pack on trends, yet without eliminating any age or style.  In fact, Manager Hollie says their customers range from young girls to mature women with every one of them looking and feeling great.

Star Players

Naked Heat Eyeshadow Palette

This palette is perfect for late summer into autumn with its coppery tones, burnt oranges and shimmering bronzes.  There are so many looks I’ve enjoyed creating with it, from a more dramatic evening look (as seen in the final look onwards), or a wash of warmth which I created at home, as below. The shadows feature the label’s Pigment Infusion System™ too for serious staying power.

Naked Flushed Compact

I’m now addicted to this.  Create your own palette of chosen shades with this feather light collection of a bronzer, highlighter and blush.  This makes my skin look sensational; the best way to fake a glow.  I’ve used it in the above look.

Top Tip from the Team

The super friendly Molly did my makeup.  She recommends investing in the eyeshadow primer to even out imperfection and make your eye makeup last all day, as well as the All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray to lock your look in place and to refresh it throughout the day.  The latter was a game changer for me.

Good to Know

At this counter, you can also experience complimentary looks on single areas such as eyes or lips, or book in for a range of lessons and makeovers from £25, which is redeemable against products.
