How to Perfect Everyday Summer Style

As a Personal Stylist, the majority of clients love the summer but they also struggle on what to wear throughout it.  From capsule wardrobe staples to showing off body parts they don’t like, to keeping cool in the heat, I answer your most common summer style dilemmas…

I hate my legs – what do I wear?

Flattering styles that cut you off mid-shin (everyone’s slimmest part), or just above your ankle work well including culottes, midi skirts and midi dresses, and peg trousers.  River Island have plenty of styles.

Maxi skirts and maxi dresses are perfect for spring-summer, Miss Selfridge has got this so right.  Team a maxi skirt with a vest, sleeveless button-down shirt or a slogan t-shirt, and flat pumps or gladiator sandals.

If you’re petite, it is worth investing in a maxi skirt or dress that you love and fits well to your boy and paying for a tailor to hem it, because you will get so much wear out of it.  I’m also really impressed with River Islands new petite range.

I’m too hot!  I want to feel cool (and look it too)

It’s all in the fabrics and cut you choose.  Keep cool and look elegant in wide legged palazzo pants or linen trousers, or wear culottes with a crop top, tee or bikini top. Playsuits are cute and sassy and can be smartened up with a blazer over the top when it gets cooler. Cold shoulder tops also help your skin breathe and look great with denim shorts for a laid back look, or tailored shorts to look more polished. Team with fun shoes such as tassel or pompom cork heels or this seasons faux fur sliders.

I’m going on holiday – what do I take?

As a rough guide pack the following items that you can mix and match:

  • 3 colourful and / or metallic camis and a longer sleeved top in a neutral tone
  • 1-neutral cardigans or wrap, 1 bold coloured one
  • 1-2 casual dresses or skirts, 1 smarter dress
  • 1 pair jeans, 1 pair trousers, 1 pair shorts
  • 2 swimsuits or bikinis, a hat, 2 sarongs and a pashmina
  • Shoes – I know it is tempting to pack a pair for every outfit combination but you only really need a beach pair of flip flops, casual sandals, a dressy pair of heels

You can wear the jeans, a cami and a wrap with your sandals to the airport to travel in. The camis can also be worn with the trousers, shorts and skirts.  Casual dresses can be glammed up with jewellery, heels and a bold lipstick.  Wear your sarong as a dress by the pool in the day.  Team your bikini top with your shorts and heels for a Saint Tropez style evening feel.

What do I wear to the office when it’s baking outside?

Summer dresses are ideal for the office, they look smart but keep you cool.  You can layer a blazer over the top and team with wedges or ballet pumps.  My only rule per se, is do not let it all hang out!  Choose dresses that fall to the knee or below and no plunging necklines.  Spaghetti straps aren’t ideal, choose tailored styles or wider straps you can wear a bra with, without showing it off to your peers!  It is the same with shoes, showing too much is a no-no, so avoid flip flops and opt for sliders, mules or pumps instead.

Tailored shorts look fabulous with a light cotton shirt tucked in, while palazzo pants and a sleeveless t-shirt with reems of necklaces will keep you looking pro, and feeling fresh.
