River Island Menswear Department Makes Outfit Choosing Easy

I love River Island, I never fail to buy something in there as the store so closely follows trends while being consistent with classic wardrobe staples such as blazers and denim. So when I got news that the new menswear department has had a re-jig to make outfit coordination easier, I thought you’d want to know too. You can thank me later…

What is all about?

The River Island menswear department has moved its Footwear range to the back of the store near the fitting room to enable multi service on these two departments working together. You want a pair of brogues to go with that suit? Done. Now you can plan your entire outfit with ease.

It also means the whole right side of the floor is opened up as a dedicated space for Smart/Smasual men’s fashion, which is really big this season.

Don’t you just love the term, ‘smasual’? It’s a term I picked up from these guys and one I plan to adopt into my fashion lingo from now on.

I caught up with Men’s Manager, Luke to get the lowdown, ‘We hope with this move we can create a ‘shop within a shop’ feel and a destination for men’s smart product on one side of the floor to contrast with our usual more casual side of the store’. Luke continues, ‘Our denim department then serves as a nice divide, breaking up the two. We can also now see footwear again when entering the department at the top of the stairs so the floor as a whole is more clear cut and the customer can clearly see distinct zones which they can choose to shop in’.

This is music to the ears of many I’m sure, since it essentially means you pull together your look (and your entire wardrobe if you like), with a holistic view of what’s on offer.

What’s in-store right now?

The autumn/winter stock is coming in now what with the change in weather, and it’s proving to be a big hit already.

With three deliveries a week into store there is always guaranteed to be new lines on the shop floor with each visit, and so River Island are always re-working the looks to update the floor to the newest trends. This way, they are always showing customers ways to wear items ready for the winter season and also give us inspiration early for those who have already started Christmas shopping. I’m guilty, are you?

Navy tailored suit jacket, £65

On what’s hot this season for menswear, Luke says ‘our smart product this year is all about layering and what we call ‘smasual’ dressing. For instance, the traditional suit can now be worn with a casual tee under the jacket and even trainers, dressing down the traditional suit and tie combo’.

White canvas plimsoles, £25

‘Our hybrid knitwear new into store also has patch detailing and more relaxed fits to give a fashion led edge and provide a funky alternative to a plain white work shirt’.

Campaign shot, with gilets starting from £38

‘In more casual styles, the sports luxe trend is really key write now. Joggers and hoodie sets can be teamed with puffer jackets, gilets and an array of long line, regular and the ever popular muscle fit tee in pops of red and cobalt blue- key colours of the season’.

Red t-shirt, £8

In terms of wardrobe must-haves that you should be clambering to get, River Island tell me that outerwear and knitwear are where it’s at. ‘For smart wear I would say a wool overcoat, which we have in tan and grey in store never fails’ beams Luke. ‘It can be layered over a suit in colder weather or look equally as stylish when dressed over a hoodie and joggers, a versatile investment piece for sure’.

Wool coat, a variety of cuts and colours available – please ask in store.  Prices start from £40.

For a more casual look, Luke says a textured gilet is always a key statement, worn over a hoodie or knitwear and to give that transitional look that this season is all about.

I think that’s this season taken care of. Be sure to pop in and take a look.
