“Florals? For spring? Ground-breaking.” This is one of my favourite sarcastic quotes from The Devil Wears Prada, played and preached by the fabulous Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly…and yes, florals do indeed bloom in popularity every spring and summer.
However, this year – they’ve upped their game and get a little attitude makeover…
The New Florals
Usually when we think of florals, we think prissy, delicate even dated. We don’t think rock star, gothic or moody yet this is what we have to look forward to for spring 2017. Blooms are embellishing everything from footwear to handbags, dresses to tops and shirts.

Firstly, flowers have got bigger – they are bolder, they’re striking and in stand out colours. Look out for florals that sit on a contrasting background such as gingham or lace, and on tougher fabrics such as denim and leather.

There is a glamorous, gothic element creeping in too with black and floral maxi dresses and statement loafers and heels, which makes a change from the usual predictable pretty pastels.

How to Wear
If there are any fashion rules today, they are made to be broken so mix it up and wear head-to-toe florals in different fabrics. A floor length floral lace dress would look amazing toughened up with a floral leather biker jacket and trainers, for instance.

Pick out a colour in the floral pattern and match your nail polish and lipstick to it. Have fun with accessories and wear floral bags and shoes, and team them with colours that compliment those of the pattern.
Most of all though, have fun trying it on and remember frumpy florals are over and done with. It’s all about fierce florals now. Happy shopping.
